Recognizing Helping

The coach rarely rewrites a plate — it protects what’s already working. Helping isn’t a food group: learn to spot what deserves protection — and what’s only pretending.

The coach rarely rewrites a plate.

It protects what’s already working.

Today that might be grilled fish, beans, vegetables.

Tomorrow — tofu, lentils, plain yogurt.

The point isn’t the vegetable.

The point is learning to recognize Helping.

Helping isn’t a food group

Helping is the part you’d protect — useful work toward the goal on this plate.

It often looks like protein, vegetables, beans, fruit, broth — or food prepared more simply.

But “looks healthy” isn’t the same as Helping.

Helping

  • Grilled fish
  • Vegetables

Watch

  • Rice

One move

Keep the fish and vegetables. Half the rice.

The Call keeps what’s working. It doesn’t award points for produce.

When greens aren’t automatically Helping

A mountain of roasted potatoes with a few greens isn’t a plate built around vegetables.

Creamed spinach and steamed broccoli aren’t read the same way.

When the mound gets big — or the preparation gets heavy — veg can land on Watch, not Helping.

Try it yourself

Huge roasted potato pile, a spoon of broccoli, grilled chicken. What’s the useful read?

How to spot it

Ask, before you name a food group:

  • What’s worth protecting on this plate?
  • What’s already working toward the goal?
  • What’s actually helping — and what’s only pretending to?

Start with What helps the plate? — then practice here across shapes.

Examples of the same skill (not sibling “nutrient” lessons):

  • Why the Coach Protects Protein — protein often carries Helping
  • Beans, tofu, broth, fruit, a simple veg side — when they’re actually carrying the plate

What FastSnap does

When the Coach’s Call keeps fish, beans, or greens and only moves on the tip, that’s Helping recognized first — not a rewrite, and not a “eat more vegetables” lecture.

Snap the plate. Name what’s worth protecting. Then tip what tips.

Try it next

On your next scan, list Helping before you list “healthy foods.” Notice if anything you almost called Helping is really Watch.
